… Millions have been left homeless, thousands remain missing and hundreds are being treated for injuries after the series of tsunamis crashed on to beaches in nine countries and left a mammoth trail of destruction.
Killer waves, some 20ft high, were created by the quake under the sea off the west coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra early on Sunday.
Their impact was felt on the coast of Somalia in eastern Africa – almost 3,000 miles from the quake’s epicentre.
Sri Lanka reported 12,029 deaths.
Indonesia confirmed at least 4,991 dead with the number there expected to top 10,000.
India said it had around 4,000 fatalities.
Thailand, where many British tourists were staying, registered 866 killed.
Somalian officials said hundreds of people, many of them fishermen, had died and entire villages were washed away.
Fears are growing that there may have been a massive loss of life in the remote, Indian controlled Andaman and Nicobar islands where there are already 3,000 dead.
Sri Lankan officials have declared a national disaster and similar measures have been taken in the Maldives, the string of 1,192 coral atolls where 43 people were killed.
A total 52 people were confirmed dead in Malaysia, 34 in Burma and two in Bangladesh.

It was the right decision if Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the president of Indonesian Republic, declares this cataclysm as a national disaster.
